So, De Stijl is my favourite White Stripes album. So rich and raw, with a sometimes staggering velocity and other-times saccharine sweetness. Meg’s thudding, crashing percussion provides a ramshackle frame to Jack’s rumbling hollowbody guitar.

The lyrics paint a picture of a quiet, introverted lonely girl who is mistreated by everyone around her because they don’t understand how she can live in such a reflective state. The people around her try to change her, maybe try to coax her “out” of this shell. She stares back, unmoved.

Maybe it’s because I got into De Stijl late (It was after White Blood Cells when I finally dipped into it) but this song lodged itself somewhere in my mopey introvert teenage brain. This is easily one of my favourite songs.
